Kierkegaard (yes, I have no idea how to pronounce his name, either) was apparently one of the founders of Existentialism. Kierkegaard did most of his seminal writing under assumed names: Victor Eremita (“Either/Or”); Johannes de Silentio (“Fear and Trembling”); Anti-Climacus (“The Sickness Unto Death”); Hilarious Bookbinder (“Stages on Life's Way”); When I was learning Danish, I tried to read him in the original, but he is one of those rare stylists whose thought and diction are so unpredictable and rife with paradox that you can never guess a word that you don't know from its context. This section might prove useful for other thinkers, but in Kierkegaard's particular case I think it might be better to actually provide a brief discussion of his major pseudonyms. His reputation as a precursor to Symbolism has largely to do with his inclusion in two early critical works that helped to define the Symbolist canon: Paul Verlaine's The Accursed Poets (1888), and Remy de Gourmont's The Book of Masks (1896) (from which Felix Valloton's drawing of Kierkegaard begins the "Diapsalmata" section of Either/Or with a stunning definition of the poet:. His writings comprise the first portion of Either/Or, often categorized as the “aesthetic” portion, as A is an aesthete and represents the aesthetic stage of existence. I find humor in those aspects of myself that can be reduced to clichés when I laugh at 'Stuff White People Like', but I also separate off another part, the part that does the laughing. Literary Involvement: Writer of many articles in Either/Or, possible editor or author of Diary of a Seducer, an article in Either/Or. Either/Or 1: Kierkegaard's Writings. But his philosophy is grounded firmly in Christianity. I recently had the opportunity to test this question on a visit with students to the homeland of Søren Kierkegaard, one of Europe's leading 19th-century intellectuals.
